Leading Change, TEAMbuilding, Vision, Leadership by Example

As a senior executive for an international security contractor, I led the reinvention of the corporation’s learning and development processes.  Prior to taking on this challenge, the company had relied on Labelle projectors and videotape as communication media for the training of security officers throughout the company’s 145 field offices.  During a monthly “President’s Meeting,” the CEO challenged me to bring the department into the 21st Century.

I led a comprehensive review of the process and identified three major systemic problems: employee testing on the videotape material was inefficient and time consuming due to the required documentation and paper trail, no method existed for communication with employees on a routine basis, and physical security post instructions were not uniform or consistent in their development or presentation.

To address these issues, I negotiated and entered into an agreement with a computer-based training consultant resulting in the development of the company’s first interactive CD Rom learning & development module entitled, “Letters and Parcel Bombs – A Trojan Horse.”   In a collaborative effort with the print shop, we designed a “Learning Series Bulletin” to be included with the employee’s paycheck every two weeks.  In addition, I directed the development, issuance, and implementation of the Mission Partnership StatementÒ document template for use in all field operations.  This was the first written guidance for security personnel instructions and special orders to be published in 30 years.

None of this would have been possible without my leadership, which earned the full cooperation and support of my staff.  I encouraged them to share my vision of a learning & development initiative for the 21st century.  All of my employees joined the effort and we formed a truly effective team. Working together, we implemented the new processes and gained the respect and trust of frontline security officers, HR personnel and operational managers.  As a result of our efforts, the TEAM and I received sizeable bonuses and recognition at our annual “Winning Wednesday” company presentations.
